Hackney Empire
London
Hackney Empire, designed by Frank Matcham in 1901 is one of the finest surviving Variety theatres in Britain.
Following an international competition, Tim Ronalds Architects undertook the restoration of the wonderful Grade II* listed 1400 seat auditorium, the construction of a new stage and backstage building and a new front of house building.
The new building, although completely modern, is at home with the old; the giant terracotta letters of its façade proclaim the theatre and square as the heart of Hackney. The project was funded by the SRB, Arts Council, Heritage Lottery, and private donations.
