with large audiences.

The Colyer-Fergusson Building

Completion: 2012
Location: University of Kent, Canterbury

Music is not a degree subject at the University of Kent, but music plays an unusually important part in the life of the University. Students and staff participate in a thriving music programme, performing in orchestras, choirs and bands of all kinds.

The Colyer-Fergusson building provides a world-class concert hall, teaching and rehearsal spaces. The Hall has an unusual level of flexibility in a space with outstanding acoustics; two retractable seating systems allow it to be configured for rehearsals, small scale ensembles, and large scale orchestral and choral performances. The acoustic and appearance of the Hall can be varied by curtains to suit music of all kinds.

the feeling on stage is close to perfect, with that beautiful warm wood all around and the dimensions are just right: spacious but still intimate. The acoustics are just fantastic: one can hear a pin drop and comfortably explore the extremes of dynamics.
— Daniel Rowland, leader of the Brodsky Quartet
