Sevenoaks School New House
Completion: 2024
Location: Sevenoaks, Kent
New House is the second new boarding house we have completed for Sevenoaks School, following the success of Aisher House.
The house is designed to complement its woodland setting, nestling into the hillside to present a relatively low, almost domestic scale profile to the adjacent lawn and new approach road from the south. A palette of specially designed diamond shaped hanging tiles, with a dark brick plinth is set-off attractively by verdant trees, and the informal arrangement of windows is picked out in a subtle greenish-bronze. Entrance doors introduce accents of colour within the façade, and are designed using the language of domestic front and back doors.
Internally, ash panelling, oak floors and terracotta tiles sit alongside colourful walls, creating a welcoming, calm atmosphere. Each social space, around which the bedrooms are arranged, and its adjacent stair, has its own colour palette and identity. Bedrooms are designed not to be identical to one another. They are fitted with different coloured carpets, and different coloured tiles in the ensuite showers. Combined with their varied outlook onto woodland, the lawn, or towards neighbouring boarding houses, each room has its own character, emphasising the domestic feel of the house.
