Ingrebourne Valley Visitor Centre

A visitor centre for the Essex Wildlife Trust overlooking the tranquil wetland of the Ingrebourne Valley. The building will introduce visitors to the natural world of the Country Park, and to the wartime history of the site. From here, squadrons of Spitfires flew to defend London from attack.

Ingrebourne Valley Visitor Centre

Completion: 2015
Location: Hornchurch, Essex

The Ingrebourne Velley is a nature reserve, and expanse of tranquil wetland running though Hornchurch to the Thames. From the airfield on the west bank squadrons of Spitfires flew to defend London during the Second World War. The Essex Wildlife Trust and the London Borough of Havering commissioned us to create a visitor and education centre for the thousands who come to enjoy the beauty and history of the area. Standing in an isolated spot, the exterior is protected by steel shutters which open to reveal a warm timber and glass building with beautiful views of the wildlife and wetlands.
